                                                     Canework

A typical Edwardian bedroom chair which has 84-88 holes drilled into the wooden frame of the seat @ 90p/hole would cost approx £75.00 including materials.

On more contemporary furniture such as Habitat, or much of the European imported dining chairs, loom or sheet cane is applied. Again, the price of such work is dependant on the area to be covered, but a standard Habitat seat would cost £45.00,  including materials.

A somewhat more intricate finish is known as Skeining, originally using willow, but today is usually completed using rattan cane. This method is also known as French or close caning, the cost of which usually starts at £80.00 for a foot-square stool. The price includes materials.

It should also be noted that it is the policy of Willowcraft Renovations to leave all finished canework in its original state as staining the material is largely unsuccessful.

                                                          Rush

The price for a standard, square dining chair in rush is £70.00, though larger and shaped chairs will cost more. Materials are included in the price, but it is always advisable to contact Willowcraft to get a definitive costing.

                                                       Seagrass
Seagrass is a cheaper alternative to rush, but still produces a good, rustic finish. A foot-square stool can be covered at a cost of £30.00 to include materials.

                                                      Upholstery

All upholstery work is carried out according to the customers specification and as such, prices can only be given on application. Both tradditional and contemporary methods are employed.

It should be noted that it is always better to contact Willowcraft regarding pricing in order to be given a firm quotation before any work is started.

                                                Framework repairs

In addition, as such technical, time consuming craftwork can be expensive; the condition of the chair frame should be checked. It would be pointless going to the effort and expense of reseating a much loved chair, only to have the frame collapse after completion.

All such framework repairs must be carried out before the cane, rush or upholstery is applied as it cannot be rectified afterwards. For the customer’s convenience, such work can be carried out at  our workshop once a price has been agreed. Please note: No structural work will be carried out without the express wish of the customer, though free and friendly advice will be offered on request.
